Delivering on Scouting’s biggest stage
Corporate Magic assembled a “dream team” of companies and individuals who spent more than a year mapping out the week’s activities, ensuring every detail reinforced the BSA’s overarching theme. The logistical challenges were immense. Fort AP Hill’s remote location—75 miles south of Washington, DC, and 35 miles north of Richmond—combined with the restrictions of working on an active Army base, required meticulous planning. The campgrounds and activity areas spanned more than 3,000 acres, forcing many Scout troops to hike one to two hours each way to the arena shows. Over the week, three major productions were staged featuring popular bands Honor Society and Switchfoot, Miss America Caress Cameron, Dirty Jobs host Mike Rowe, and U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, along with a videotaped message from President Barack Obama. GoVision erected the tallest portable LED screen ever built—more than 60 feet high and 18 feet wide—to bring the spectacle to life. Other arena highlights included the largest theatrical fireworks display ever allowed on a military installation, dramatic flyovers and aerial jump teams from every military branch, parade horses, U.S. Army Strykers, a cast of 400 Scouts integrated into the stage production, and dozens of pre-produced video packages. Spanning 13 acres and tied together by more than 20 miles of cable, the arena was both a creative and technical feat, and an achievement worthy of the Boy Scouts’ storied legacy.
Empowering the next generation
Despite the huge logistical and technical challenges, Corporate Magic and its partners produced an absolutely amazing experience for the thousands in attendance at Fort AP Hill, as well as those watching around the globe via a live online broadcast. The event was a vivid reminder that Scouting is the most direct path to future success and leadership for young people.
