The 2019 Tournament of Roses Parade Opening Spectacular earned two Telly Awards, recognizing the creative direction and broadcast production behind the nationally televised celebration that launched the 130th Rose Parade.
DALLAS, Texas — June 2, 2019 — Corporate Magic received two Telly Awards for its work on the 2019 Tournament of Roses Parade Opening Spectacular, earning recognition in both the People’s Telly Awards and Craft categories for the nationally televised production.
Produced for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses and presented by Honda, the Opening Spectacular served as the televised kickoff to the 130th Rose Parade on January 1, 2019. The production welcomed millions of viewers to one of America’s most celebrated New Year’s Day traditions while setting the stage for the parade’s official theme, “The Melody of Life.”
The performance, themed “Good Vibrations – A Melody of Life Celebration,” was headlined by singer, dancer, and Dancing with the Stars champion Jordan Fisher. Following the Opening Spectacular, legendary R&B artist and Rose Parade Grand Marshal Chaka Khan delivered a special performance to officially begin the procession of floral floats, marching bands, and equestrian units along Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena.
The production earned a People’s Telly Bronze Award in the category of Television Programs and Segments, recognizing the overall quality and impact of the program. Corporate Magic also received a Craft – Directing Bronze Award, recognizing excellence in the overall direction of the televised production.
The award-winning production was directed and written by Stephen Dahlem, Senior Creative Director at Corporate Magic. The project team included Christopher Laue as Executive Producer, Brian Greenway as Account Director, Marty Pasetta Jr. as Broadcast Director, and Doug Armstrong as Technical Producer.
The Tournament of Roses Parade remains one of the most-watched annual television broadcasts in the United States, requiring a production approach that resonates with both the live audience in Pasadena and millions of viewers watching nationwide.
“Creating an opening sequence for a broadcast with this kind of history and visibility is both a privilege and a responsibility,” said Jim Kirk, Chief Executive Officer and President of Corporate Magic. “This recognition reflects the creativity, collaboration, and dedication of an exceptional team that worked together to help launch one of television’s most enduring traditions.”
The Opening Spectacular combined live performance, broadcast storytelling, music, choreography, staging, and television production to create a memorable introduction to the parade. The production was designed to celebrate the universal role music plays in people’s lives while creating an energetic and emotional opening for viewers across the country.
For Corporate Magic, the awards further reinforce the company’s expertise in producing high-profile broadcast events that combine creative storytelling, technical execution, and audience engagement on a national stage.
The recognition also highlights the continued contributions of Corporate Magic’s creative, production, and broadcast teams in developing experiences that connect with audiences whether they are seated in the venue or watching from home.
